ZURICH — Arjun Malik produced the throw of his life on Thursday night, sending the javelin 88.4 metres in the fourth round to top the Diamond League qualifying standings and book his place in the season finale.
The 22-year-old from Haryana had never thrown beyond 86 metres in competition. His series in Zurich — 84.1, 85.9, a foul, then the 88.4 — was a study in controlled escalation, and his coach later revealed the plan had been to open the big throw only in the final round.
The result continues Indian athletics’ remarkable decade in the throwing events. Malik is the third Indian man to top a Diamond League qualifying round, and the youngest. The finale, in two weeks, will pit him against the reigning world champion — a meeting the sport’s broadcasters have already begun to promote as the rivalry of the next Olympic cycle.
