MUMBAI — The fourth major streaming platform this year unveiled a slate on Wednesday in which regional-language originals outnumber Hindi commissions — confirming what industry executives now describe as a structural shift rather than a passing trend.
The numbers tell the story. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi originals together account for the majority of new Indian commissions across the top four platforms, driven by completion rates that consistently outperform Hindi tentpoles and acquisition costs that run a fraction of star-led projects.
The shift is reordering the industry’s geography. Writers’ rooms in Kochi and Pune now pitch directly to platform commissioning teams that once operated only out of Mumbai’s western suburbs. “The centre of gravity hasn’t moved,” one platform’s content head said. “It has multiplied.”
